Description/Significance
Brooklyn Cohousing, LLC is a group of Brooklyn residents creating their own village within the community. The families share not just the building but communal spaces where together they can enjoy meals, activities, arts, etc. The first of its kind in the NYC area, there are approximately 110 such projects throughout the United States and Canada.
JBS has been hired to serve as the Owner’s Representative for this project, involving the conversion of a 35,000 SF former mattress factory into 31 residential units, as well as common spaces such as a shared kitchen, great room, exercise room, solarium, roof deck and gardens.
The building will also qualify for NYSERDA grant money and will be designed as an energy-efficient project with super-insulated walls and roof, solar water & heating, rainwater collection, and high-efficiency mechanical systems.
